Pooyam Thirunal at Puthiyakavu Bhagavathi Temple in Ernakulam is one of the most revered and vibrant festivals celebrated by devotees of the Goddess Bhagavathi. The festival is marked by a series of sacred rituals, traditional poojas and devotional ceremonies that reflect the rich spiritual heritage of Kerala.
The temple dedicated to the Mother Goddess comes alive during this auspicious occasion drawing devotees from all parts of the region to participate in the celebrations.
The day begins with the ceremonial opening of the temple doors known as Nadathurakkal allowing devotees to witness the sanctum adorned with sacred offerings and traditional decorations. This is followed by Ganapathi Homam, a special ritual invoking Lord Ganesha for the removal of obstacles and the blessing of devotees with prosperity and well being. Various poojas such as Ethruth Pooja and Kalabham Pooja are performed with utmost devotion highlighting the temple’s unique customs and rituals that have been preserved for generations.
A highlight of the festival is the Kalabha Abhishekam, a sacred offering involving the ceremonial bathing of the deity which is performed with precision and devotion by the temple priests. This ritual symbolizes the purification and sanctification of both the temple and the devotees. The festival also features the grand Thirunal Sadya, a traditional feast served to devotees showcasing Kerala’s culinary heritage with an array of delicious vegetarian dishes.
