Para Utsavam is one of the most vibrant and significant annual festivals celebrated at Tripunithura Sree Poornathrayeesa Temple in Ernakulam, Kerala. This festival, held during the Malayalam month of Kumbham is a grand event that attracts thousands of devotees from across the state and beyond.
The festival spans several days, beginning with the Kodiyet which marks the formal commencement of the festivities. Devotees gather in large numbers to witness this auspicious ritual offering their prayers and participating in the devotional ceremonies. Following this, the temple hosts daily Sheeveli and other poojas accompanied by traditional music and chants creating an atmosphere of spiritual fervor.
A key highlight of Para Utsavam is the Ezunnallippu procession where the ceremonial paras are carried from the temple through specific routes in Thrippunithura and neighboring areas. These processions pass through various temples, ancestral homes and sacred spots, receiving offerings and blessings along the way. Each day of the festival has a designated route and set of temples ensuring that the divine presence of the deity reaches all devotees in the region.
The festival concludes with Aarattu, the holy ceremonial bath of the deity symbolizing the purification and completion of the festival rituals. Throughout Para Utsavam, devotees actively participate by offering paras, flowers, rice and other sacred items maintaining a strong sense of community and devotion.
