The Shivaratri Mahotsavam 2026 at Mattakuzhy Shivaparvathy Temple in Ernakulam is a vibrant and spiritually enriching festival that attracts devotees from across Kerala and beyond.
The festival begins each morning with Palliyunarthal, a ritual to awaken the deities followed by Chatushuddhi and Dhaar symbolizing purification and divine blessings. Devotees also participate in Prabhatapoojas and Ganapathi Homam invoking prosperity and removing obstacles. Each day features a series of temple rituals and ceremonial offerings conducted by the appointed priests and key community members ensuring that the sacred traditions are meticulously observed.
Devotional music performances including Bhaktigaanasudha create an atmosphere of divine devotion while classical dance performances such as Kathakali, Bharatanatyam and Thiruvathira showcase Kerala’s traditional performing arts. Evening events often feature Kolkali, Ottanthullal and fusion performances engaging the local community and visitors in joyous celebrations.
The festival also includes the Aarattu, a ceremonial bath of the deities which is the highlight of the Mahotsavam followed by the Sadhya feast for devotees.
