A recent version about the origin of the temple is connected with the legacy of Naranathbhranthan a legendary hero of Pattambi area. As part of the visit to important shrines, Naranathbhrantan came from Poonthanam Illom where there is a Srikrishna temple.
Hence he reached Srikrishna temple of Pattambi covered by Bharatapuzha on the one side. The river takes us to Thirunavaya and Navamukunda temple besides the Brahma and Mahadeva temples. From this Trimoorthi confluence the saint globe trotter went to Thriprangode Siva temple where there are half a dozen Siva temples of different dimensions. After visiting Thriprangode Naranathbharanthan came to Mammiyoor (Lord Siva), Guruvayoor (Srikrishna) and Chovalloor (Lord Siva). He felt the need to visit Guruvayoorappan once again and thereafter moved to Thriprayar (Sri Rama) temple Sangameswara temple (Irinjalakuda), Sree Lakshmanaswami Temple (Thirumoozhikkulam) and Payammel Satrugnaswami temple. It was after this four temple darsan he came to Kannankulangara (Sreekrishnaswami) temple. As a good swimmer Naranathbhrantan crossed Periyar at Varapuzha and reached Eloor Island. He found the people suffering from innumerable disabilities including shortage of rice. Consequently he was thinking of the measures to be adopted to retrieve the people of all their problems.
While taking a bath in a pond he found an idol of Sreekrishna which he consecrated in an ideal place which became the Naranath Sreekrishna temple of today. Since it was consecrated by Naranathbhrantan, the temple got this name. It has been said that, like Mahabali, he too secured samadhi after his darsan of Vamanamoorthy at Thrikkakkara. He was staying in the Thrikkakkara temple for a few days and as part of this stay he visited the Poornathrayeesa temple of Thrippunithura (Vishnu in sitting posture), the later capital of the Cochin princely state initially known as Perumpadappu. It was because of the flood in the river Periyar in 1341 that the ruler of Mahodayapuram or Thiruvanchikulam left the area in a yacht and the place where he landed was Perumpaddu. Then Cochin princely state used to be called as Perumpadappu Swarupam to begin with.
