The Kalamezhuthu, Paatu, and Mudiyettu festival at Chottanikkara Bhagavathy Temple is one of Kerala’s most vibrant and culturally rich traditional celebrations reflecting the deep rooted devotion and artistic heritage of the region.
Chottanikkara Temple dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathy is renowned not only as a spiritual center but also as a hub for preserving classical and folk art forms. This festival brings together devotees, artists and visitors to experience the magical interplay of ritual, music and visual artistry.
Kalamezhuthu is the exquisite ritual art of floor drawing where colored powders are used to create intricate depictions of the deity. The process itself is a meditative and sacred practice involving precise designs and symbolism that honor the Goddess. Once the kalam is completed, it is accompanied by devotional paatu songs that narrate mythological stories, praise the deity and enhance the spiritual atmosphere of the temple.
Mudiyettu, a traditional ritualistic dance drama is a spectacular part of the festival, combining storytelling, elaborate costumes and dynamic performances. Originating centuries ago in Kerala, Mudiyettu enacts the battle between the Goddess and the demon king symbolizing the victory of good over evil.
