Thiruvumplavil Mahadeva Temple is a highly revered Shiva temple located in Anicadu village near Muvattupuzha in the Ernakulam district of Kerala. Often referred to as “Kerala Kashi” this sacred temple holds immense spiritual significance among devotees especially those who come here to perform ancestral rituals and seek divine blessings of Lord Shiva.
The temple is uniquely known for its divine features such as “Thirukulambu” and “Theerthakkara” which are deeply associated with sacred water flow believed to be equivalent to “Kashi Theertham.” According to local belief, the presence of this holy water makes the temple a powerful site for performing Pithru Tharpanam rituals. One of the most significant legends of this temple narrates the divine appearance of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathy before a devoted Brahmin who had shown compassion towards a diseased cow. It is believed that Goddess Parvathy herself appeared in the form of the cow to test the devotee’s sincerity. Pleased with his selfless act, Lord Shiva blessed the place and declared the sacred water flowing through the hoof mark as equal to the holy waters of Kashi. Historically, the temple has undergone several phases of renovation, with major developments recorded from Kollavarsham 1119 onwards. Structures like the Sreekovil, Gopuram, Balikkalpura, Theerthakkulam and other facilities were built and improved over time, enhancing both spiritual and architectural significance. Today, the temple stands as a symbol of devotion, tradition, and divine grace, attracting devotees seeking peace, ancestral blessings and spiritual fulfillment.

Mahashivaratri Festival
Mahashivaratri is one of the most important festivals celebrated at Thiruvumplavil Mahadeva Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. On this auspicious night, thousands of devotees gather to offer special poojas, abhishekam and continuous bhajans with deep devotion. A major highlight of the festival is the performance of Pithru Tharpanam at the sacred Thirukulambu and Theerthakkara, where holy water is believed to be equivalent to Kashi Theertham. The temple environment becomes highly spiritual with lamps, chanting of mantras, and night-long worship of Lord Shiva.
Karkkidaka Vavu Bali
Karkkidaka Vavu Bali is another significant ritual observed at Thiruvumplavil Mahadeva Temple where devotees perform ancestral offerings to honour their forefathers. Thousands of people arrive at the temple during this sacred day to perform Bali rituals near the holy Theerthakkulam and Thirukulambu. It is believed that offerings made here reach the ancestors directly and bring peace to their souls. The temple premises are filled with devotees, sacred chants and disciplined ritual practices, creating a deeply spiritual atmosphere.
