Sree Puthankulangara Siva Temple Ernakulam

The Sree Puthankulangara Siva Temple, located in Eroor North, Thripunithura, Ernakulam, is dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Sree Puthankulangara Siva Temple has a rich history dating back to the 17th century. Bhagavathy was installed in the temple during this time by Mambattu Bhattathiri. Additionally, Dharma Sastha, another deity of the temple, holds historical significance. Legend has it that during the late 18th century, amidst an attack by Tipu Sultan's soldiers on a temple in North Malabar, a devotee safeguarded the partially damaged idol of Dharma Sastha and brought it to Kochi.

Mambattu Bhattathiri then installed this idol near the Siva temple. Later, during the reign of Sakthan Thampuran, the King of Kochi State, the Siva temple underwent reconstruction. It is believed that the king's shoulder ailment was cured after he prayed to Lord Siva at this temple. Additionally, an oottupura was built by the king to provide meals to devotees.

Festivals

The Temple has a number of festivals. The important ones are :

Ulsavam

Scheduled for six days in the month of Makaram every year, with Aarattu day falling on Punartham, coinciding with Punaprathishta Dinam. This festival includes various rituals, processions, and cultural programs, attracting devotees from far and wide.

Punaprathishta Dinam

Marks the day of reinstallation or reconsecration of the deity. This significant event is celebrated with special poojas, rituals, and offerings, signifying the renewal of divine presence and blessings in the temple. Devotees gather to seek blessings and participate in the festivities surrounding this auspicious occasion.
