Situated just 19 km from Kochi city, this sacred shrine is dedicated to Parasakthi, the supreme Mother Goddess, worshipped here in her powerful and radiant form as Durga Bhagavathi.
The temple exudes divine grace and spiritual energy, attracting devotees from far and wide. According to local legends, around 700 years ago, the site where the temple now stands was once part of the sea. Fishermen from the area discovered a magnificent idol of the Goddess emerging from the waters—an extraordinary and divine event that surprised the entire community. They immediately handed over the idol to the governing authorities of the locality. Over time, the sea gradually receded from that region, leaving behind the land where the temple stands today. In reverence to the divine occurrence, the locals constructed a temple known as “Pallath Temple,” which later evolved into the present name “Pallathamkulangara.” One of the unique aspects of this temple is that it houses a single deity (Eka Vigraha Prathishta), making it spiritually distinctive.
Another important belief associated with the temple is the presence of ‘Budhan’ (Mercury), the planetary lord of education and intelligence. Because of this, many students visit the temple to perform Vidya Mantra Archana to seek blessings for academic success and knowledge. The temple also hosts vibrant annual festivals in the Malayalam month of Kumbham, especially from the star Thiruvonam to Bharani. Major traditional rituals and art forms such as Thalappoli, Vela, Padayani, and Thookkam are celebrated with great devotion and cultural splendour, drawing large gatherings of devotees and visitors. Pallathamkulangara Bhagavathi Temple remains a symbol of divine protection, cultural heritage, and spiritual strength for the entire region.
