The name "Mammalassery" is deeply rooted in the Ramayana legend. It is believed that this is the place where Lord Rama killed the demon Maricha, the uncle of Ravana, who had disguised himself as a golden deer. According to the tale, Maricha approached Sita Devi in the form of a golden-colored deer at their Parnasala during the Vanavasa.

Enchanted by its beauty, Sita requested Rama to capture it. Upon pursuing the deer, Rama discovered its true identity and slew Maricha, whose body was torn into pieces. The place where the deer fell became known as Man-Malachery, which gradually evolved into Mammalassery. Nearby areas Memmury and Kizhumury are believed to be where the upper and lower parts of the demon's body landed.
