The presiding deity, Lord Shiva, is enshrined in the main sanctum sanctorum facing east, and according to folklore, the idol was installed by sage Parashurama.
As part of the 108 Shiva Temples of Kerala, the temple is renowned for its spiritual significance and is especially famous for the grand celebration of the Aluva Sivarathri festival, which attracts thousands of devotees every year.

Uthra Vilakk Maholsavam
Uthra Vilakk Maholsavam at Aluva Mahadeva Temple, celebrated in the month of Meenam, is a significant and grand festival dedicated to Lord Shiva. This festival features elaborate rituals, including the lighting of traditional lamps (vilakku) which illuminate the temple and create a serene and divine atmosphere. Mahashivaratri Maholsavam
Shivaratri at Aluva Mahadeva Temple is celebrated with great reverence and devotion, drawing thousands of devotees to the temple. The festival includes an all-night vigil, special abhishekams, and continuous chanting of Lord Shiva's names and hymns. Devotees engage in various rituals, including offering bael leaves, fruits, and sweets to Lord Shiva, seeking his blessings for prosperity, health, and spiritual growth.
