Vrishchikam, also known as Vrischika Masam, is the fourth month of the traditional Malayalam calendar and is considered highly auspicious. In 2025, Vrischika Masam starts on November 17 and concludes on December 15.
The 41-day Sabarimala Mandala Kalam and Vratam commence on the first day of this month. On this day, the Sabarimala Ayyappa Temple also opens, marking the beginning of the two-month annual pilgrimage season.
The spiritual essence of Vrischika Masam lies in understanding the truth of Tat Tvam Asi “Thou Art That,” meaning there is no duality in existence. All suffering arises from the ignorance that makes us perceive a second entity, a separation. From this illusion come fear, hatred, intolerance, and conflict. When we awaken to the truth that the same divine energy illuminating the sun and filling the universe also resides within us, we transcend ignorance and move toward moksha, or liberation.
The month is considered ideal for spiritual cleansing and self–realization. Practicing mindfulness during Vrischika Masam—by remaining fully present and observing one’s thoughts and emotions without judgment helps cultivate deeper self-awareness. Setting aside time for introspection allows individuals to examine their beliefs, values, and life choices with clarity. This period is also suitable for forgiveness and release; letting go of past resentments and emotional burdens frees mental and spiritual energy, supporting personal growth and inner peace. Vrischika Masam holds immense significance for thousands of temples that follow Kerala traditions, both in India and across the world.
Vrischikam 1 marks Mandala Kala Arambam, the official beginning of the Sabarimala pilgrimage season. During this month, countless devotees undertake austerities, abstain from non-vegetarian food, and observe strict vratas dedicated primarily to Lord Ayyappa. The first twelve days of the month are especially important in many temples, most notably at the Oachira Parabrahma Temple in Kollam district. Several other major auspicious days fall within this month, including Triprayar Ekadasi, Guruvayoor Ekadasi, and Thrikarthika. In the Tamil calendar, the corresponding month is Kartik or Karthigai.
