Vishu Mahotsavam at Sharngakkavu Devi Temple in Alappuzha is a grand and historic festival celebrated with deep devotion and cultural vibrancy. The temple dedicated to the all-powerful Sharngakkavu Devi has been a center of worship and spiritual heritage for centuries. The festival begins with early morning Harinaama Keerthanam where the chanting of the Lord’s names fills the temple precincts with a spiritual aura. This is followed by Bhagavatha Parayanam, the recitation of the sacred Bhagavata Purana, which is performed by renowned scholars and local devotees, creating an atmosphere of devotion and learning. One of the main highlights of the festival is the Kavadiaattam, a traditional dance performed by the Parashakti Seva Samithi and local community members showcasing martial and ritualistic art forms unique to Kerala’s temple culture.

Another striking feature is the Kettukazhcha where beautifully decorated effigies and structures are presented in grand processions. Devotional percussion ensembles including Melapperum, bring rhythm and energy to the festival while Sopanageetham performances by accomplished musicians add a classical and spiritual dimension to the celebrations. The evenings are marked by music and dance programs featuring local and state level award winning artists as well as mega musical performances that entertain devotees of all ages. In addition to cultural programs, the festival emphasizes community participation, service and devotion. Traditional offerings, rituals like Velakali, Aal Pindi lamp offerings and Vilakkinnezhunnallippu are performed to seek the blessings of the Goddess for prosperity, harmony, and well-being. The temple premises also host a vibrant agricultural and trade fair continuing the legacy of showcasing local produce, handicrafts and traditional artifacts.
