The Uthrattathi Mahotsavam at the Major Valiyakulangara Devi Temple in Alappuzha is one of the most vibrant and spiritually significant festivals in Kerala. Celebrated with immense devotion and grandeur, this festival attracts devotees from across the state and beyond all eager to seek the blessings of the goddess.
The temple known for its deep spiritual heritage and centuries old traditions becomes a hub of religious fervor during this time, resonating with devotional chants, rhythmic drumbeats and the sacred sounds of nadaswaram.
The festival is marked by a series of elaborate rituals that reflect the unique temple customs. The sanctum is beautifully adorned and the deity is offered special poojas and offerings by the temple priests. The divine atmosphere is further enhanced by the Nalambalam where devotees gather to participate in prayers, circumambulations and ritualistic worship. The temple committee ensures that every aspect of the festival is organized with devotion from the decorations to the arrangements for devotees.
One of the most spectacular aspects of the Uthrattathi Mahotsavam is the Thiruezhunnallathu or the ceremonial procession of the goddess. The deity is taken out in a grand parade accompanied by traditional percussion ensembles, devotional music and vibrant lamp displays. The Deshathala Poli where devotees carry thaalams in a mesmerizing formation adds a unique visual and spiritual appeal to the festival. Along the route, devotees offer annadanam and welcome the goddess creating a sense of community and collective devotion.
