Thrichittatt Pancha Pandava Mahavishnu Temple in Alappuzha is a revered Hindu pilgrimage site dedicated to Lord Mahavishnu, worshiped here as Imayavarappan. The temple holds a unique place in the spiritual and cultural life of the region attracting devotees from across Kerala and beyond.
Among the temple’s most significant celebrations is the grand Thiru Utsavam, a festival that showcases the rich traditions, rituals and devotion associated with this sacred shrine.
The festival is marked by a series of elaborate rituals starting with the Pallivetta, a ceremonial hunt that symbolizes the divine power of Lord Vishnu in protecting dharma and dispelling evil. This is followed by the Thiruarattu, a holy bath ritual where the deity is ceremoniously bathed with sacred waters invoking blessings for health, prosperity and spiritual growth.
The Arattu Varavu or the procession for the holy bath is one of the highlights of the festival drawing large crowds who accompany the deity through the streets accompanied by traditional music, percussion ensembles and devotional chanting.
