Thiruvutsavam 2026 at Sree Dhanwanthari Temple, Praayikkara, Alappuzha is one of the most sacred and culturally vibrant festivals celebrated in Kerala, dedicated to Lord Dhanwanthari, the deity of Ayurveda and health. This eigh -day annual festival draws devotees from all over the state and beyond, offering a unique blend of spiritual devotion, traditional rituals and cultural performances. The festival is a testament to the temple's rich heritage and its enduring significance in the spiritual life of the local community.
The festival begins with Thrikkodiyet (flag hoisting), marking the official commencement of the celebrations. Devotees gather to witness the ritual under the guidance of the temple priests, including the main priest Brahmasree Ranjith Bhattathiri. Each day of the festival is filled with various rituals such as Abhishekam, Deepa Aradhana, Sheeveli, Shree Bhoothabali and Natayadappu providing a complete spiritual experience for the participants.
One of the festival's highlights is the Pallivetta, a symbolic ritual representing the victory of good over evil. This is followed by Arattu where the deity is taken in a ceremonial procession to the nearby river or sacred pond for purification accompanied by traditional music such as Panchavadyam and performances like Kaikottikali and Thiruvathira.
Cultural programs form an essential part of Thiruvutsavam. The festival features devotional music concerts, folk performances, semi-classical dance, karaoke shows, and competitions conducted by local youth and women’s groups. Special performances by renowned artists, including Nadaswaram and Thavil maestros add to the grandeur of the event. Children and youth also participate in competitive Kaikottikali showcasing their talent while following traditional rules and guidelines.
The temple also organizes Annadanam for devotees ensuring that everyone can partake in the celebrations.
