The annual Thiruvutsavam at Sree Bala Subramanyaswamy Temple in Alappuzha is one of the most revered and vibrant temple festivals in Kerala. Devotees from across the district and neighboring regions gather here to participate in a series of religious and cultural events that celebrate the divine presence of Lord Subramanya.
The festival is marked by a perfect blend of spiritual devotion, traditional rituals, and artistic performances, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of the region.
The festivities begin with Skanda Shashti, a day dedicated to the worship of Lord Subramanya where devotees observe fasting, offer special prayers and perform rituals seeking protection, courage, and the removal of obstacles from their lives. The temple becomes a center of devotion with devotees carrying offerings and participating in various poojas.
A key highlight of the festival is the Kodiyettam ceremony which officially marks the commencement of Thiruvutsavam. This is followed by the Purappadu (procession), where the idol of Lord Subramanya is taken out of the sanctum sanctorum in a grand procession accompanied by traditional percussion instruments and chants. The rhythmic beats of Chenda Melam and Thayambaka performances create a mesmerizing atmosphere drawing both devotees and visitors into the celebratory spirit.
Another unique feature of the festival is Kavadiyattam, a devotional dance performed by devotees carrying colorful Kavadis as offerings symbolizing their faith and surrender to the deity. The Aarattu ceremony where the idol is taken for a holy bath signifies the culmination of the festival and is observed with great reverence.
