The Thirunal Mahotsavam and 17th Punahprathista Varshikam at Karoor Sree Bhadrakali Temple, Alappuzha is one of the most celebrated and spiritually vibrant festivals in the region. This festival marks not only the annual Thirunal Mahotsavam but also commemorates the 17th anniversary of the temple’s re-consecration making it a deeply significant occasion for devotees.
The celebrations are conducted under the guidance of the temple’s chief priest ensuring that every ritual is performed with strict adherence to tradition and sanctity.
The festival begins with the sacred Ashtadravya Ganapathi Homam invoking Lord Ganesha to remove obstacles and bless the devotees. This is followed by the offering of Pongala, a devotional preparation of sweet rice made by devotees as an offering to Goddess Bhadrakali. Simultaneously, continuous Bhagavatha Parayanam or recitation of the sacred texts creates an atmosphere of divine chanting and devotion throughout the temple premises. The midday Annadanam or community meal is an integral part of the festival symbolizing the spirit of giving and service to humanity.
In the evening, special rituals such as Mahamrityunjaya Homam and Kalashabhishekam are performed invoking divine blessings for health, prosperity and well being. Devotional music programs, including Sopan Sangeetham, and traditional temple ensembles like Panchavadyam, enliven the atmosphere and create an immersive spiritual experience. The day also includes Deeparadhana, Bhagavatiseva and Eshwaranama Ghosham, allowing devotees to engage in collective prayer and meditation.
Throughout the festival, devotees have the opportunity to present offerings such as Nirapara and Tulaabharam before the deity, deepening their personal connection to the divine. The entire celebration is marked by an atmosphere of devotion, harmony and cultural richness making it a cherished spiritual event for the local community and visiting devotees alike.
