Thalappoli Mahotsavam is one of the most vibrant and significant festivals celebrated at Sri Irattakulangara Devi Temple in Alappuzha, Kerala. The festival is dedicated to the presiding deity, Sri Irattakulangara Bhagavathi and symbolizes the collective reverence and devotion of the local community.
The Mahotsavam spans multiple days, with each day marked by a series of elaborate rituals and traditional ceremonies. The festivities begin early in the morning with the welcoming of the deity through Parakkezhunallath, a ceremonial procession followed by special poojas and offerings by devotees. Devotees engage in Thalappoli, a colorful ritual where women carry traditional lamps and offerings in beautifully decorated plates creating a mesmerizing visual spectacle. The festival also features fireworks and ceremonial music adding grandeur and excitement to the celebrations.
Apart from religious observances, the festival showcases Kerala’s rich cultural heritage through folk dances, devotional songs and classical performances organized in honor of the deity.
