Thiruvutsavam at Swayambhoo Sree Maha Ganapathy Temple in Alappuzha is a spiritually vibrant and culturally rich annual celebration that draws hundreds of devotees from across the region. Revered as a rare south-facing Swayambhoo shrine of Lord Mahaganapathi, the temple holds a unique place in the devotional landscape of Kerala.
The festival is conducted with deep adherence to Vedic traditions under the guidance of the temple Thantri and Melshanthi ensuring that every ritual is performed with sacred precision and sanctity.
The celebrations begin in the early hours with Nada Thurakkal followed by Ganapathi Homam, special abhishekams, Ushapooja and Uchapooja. Devotees participate in archana and offer prayers seeking removal of obstacles, prosperity, educational success, marital harmony and overall well being. The sacred chants and rhythmic temple drums create an atmosphere charged with devotion and spiritual energy.
One of the major highlights of the festival is the grand village procession where the deity is ceremoniously taken around the temple surroundings accompanied by traditional percussion ensembles such as Panchari Melam. The majestic Nercha Aana Ezhunnallathu adds grandeur and visual splendor to the celebrations symbolizing divine majesty and cultural heritage.
Evenings are enriched with cultural programs including classical devotional dances like Thiruvathira and other traditional performances by renowned artists. These programs reflect Kerala’s rich artistic traditions and enhance the festive spirit among devotees of all ages.
