The Sreemad Bhagavatha Saptah Yajnam at Sree Dharma Sastha Temple in Alappuzha is one of the most revered spiritual events in the region drawing devotees from across Kerala and beyond.
This week-long festival is dedicated to the recitation and discourse of the Sreemad Bhagavatam one of the most important Hindu scriptures that narrates the life, teachings, and divine exploits of Lord Krishna and other incarnations of Lord Vishnu.
During the seven days of the Saptah Yajnam, the temple becomes a hub of devotion with learned scholars and priests conducting daily readings, interpretations and discussions of the sacred text. Devotees gather to listen attentively, meditate, and engage in spiritual practices that promote inner peace and devotion. The atmosphere in the temple is serene yet vibrant with devotional music chanting of mantras, and ritualistic ceremonies enriching the experience.
A highlight of the festival is the Bhadradeepa lamp-lighting ceremony which marks the formal inauguration of the Yajnam. This auspicious ritual symbolizes the removal of darkness and ignorance, invoking divine blessings for all participants. Special poojas, homams and offerings are also performed throughout the week allowing devotees to seek blessings for prosperity, health and spiritual growth.
In addition to its religious significance, the festival fosters a sense of community and unity among participants. Families, children and elders come together to partake in the celebrations offering their prayers and participating in traditional rituals.
