The Somapradosha Pooja at Mararikulam Sree Mahadeva Temple is one of the most significant and spiritually uplifting festivals observed in the Alappuzha region. Devoted to Lord Shiva, the temple hosts this sacred ritual every Monday that coincides with the Pradosha time which is considered highly auspicious for worshiping the Lord.
The festival draws devotees from nearby villages and towns all eager to seek the blessings of Lord Mahadeva for prosperity, health, and spiritual well-being.
The pooja begins in the evening with the recitation of the Sahasranama and Sree Rudram invoking the divine presence of the Lord. This is followed by traditional bhajans and devotional singing by temple musicians and local Sevasamgham groups creating an atmosphere of devotion and serenity.
A highlight of the festival is the Ashtaabhishekam, a sacred ritual in which eight different offerings are made to the deity including holy water, milk, curd, ghee, honey, and sandalwood paste. Devotees also partake in the Pradosha Payasam offering symbolizing nourishment and devotion to the Lord.
The festival includes a ceremonial procession where the deity is taken on the Rishabha Vahanam accompanied by traditional percussion instruments, lamps, and camphor arati filling the temple premises with a divine aura. Sopanam music performances further enhance the spiritual ambiance connecting devotees with the timeless tradition of Kerala temple music.
Participation in the Somapradosha Pooja allows devotees to observe the Pradosha Vratham, a vow of devotion where offerings are made with sincere faith. The temple management encourages devotees to contribute pure and sacred items such as milk, curd, ghee, honey and oil for the abhishekam.
