Shivaratri known as Maha Shivaratri, falls on the 14th night of the dark fortnight in the Malayalam month of Kumbham (February–March). Devotees from across Kerala and neighboring regions flock to the temple to participate in this sacred occasion, seeking divine blessings, spiritual upliftment, and fulfillment of their wishes.
The temple, renowned for its serene surroundings and traditional Kerala architecture, houses the presiding deities Nagaraja and Nagayakshi, along with a dedicated sanctum for Lord Shiva. During Shivaratri, the temple transforms into a vibrant hub of devotion, adorned with lights, flowers, and sacred decorations. Devotees observe night-long vigils, perform Abhishekam (ritual bathing of the Shiva Lingam) with offerings like milk, water, and sacred herbs, and chant hymns and mantras in praise of Lord Shiva.
Special poojas and rituals are conducted throughout the day and night, and the temple priests lead the ceremonies with utmost devotion. Devotees also partake in fasting and meditation as acts of spiritual discipline. The evening is marked by deepa aradhana, creating a mystical and divine ambiance in the sanctum. Shivaratri at Vetticode Temple not only highlights the rich heritage of Shiva worship in Kerala but also brings the community together in celebration of faith and devotion.
