Ashwathi Mahotsavam at Panayil Devi Temple, Alappuzha is one of the most vibrant and culturally rich celebrations in the region, dedicated to the worship of Goddess Bhagavathy, the presiding deity of Panayil.
This annual festival is a spectacular convergence of devotion, tradition and artistic heritage, attracting devotees, artists, and cultural enthusiasts from near and far. It is celebrated with meticulous rituals offering devotees a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in divine energy and spiritual devotion.
The festival is marked by a series of sacred poojas, homams and ceremonial rituals performed by the temple priests invoking the blessings of the Goddess for prosperity, health and harmony. Devotional recitations including the sacred texts of the Devi Bhagavata, form an essential part of the spiritual experience accompanied by the melodious sounds of traditional instruments like the mridangam, thavil and nadaswaram.
One of the most anticipated highlights of the Mahotsavam is the grand elephant procession where beautifully adorned elephants parade through the temple grounds accompanied by rhythmic Panchavadyam and traditional percussion ensembles. This vibrant spectacle symbolizes the majesty of the Goddess and unites the community in collective reverence and celebration.
Cultural programs are another central feature of the festival showcasing classical, semi classical and contemporary dance performances including Bharatanatyam, Mohiniyattam and folk arts.
