The Uthrittath Mahotsavam at Pappadi Sri Durga Devi Temple, Alappuzha is one of the most vibrant and spiritually enriching celebrations in the region attracting devotees from nearby villages and towns. This festival is celebrated to honor the Pratishta Varshikam, marking the annual anniversary of the consecration of the deity and is considered highly auspicious by the devotees of Goddess Durga.
The temple comes alive with elaborate rituals, traditional offerings and cultural programs creating a perfect blend of devotion and heritage.
A central highlight of the festival is the Kalasha Pooja where sacred pots filled with holy water and adorned with leaves and flowers are worshipped as symbols of prosperity and divine presence. Alongside this, the ritual of Noorum Palum is performed, where devotees offer rice powder and milk to the deity, seeking blessings for health, wealth and overall well being. The morning of the festival begins with the ceremonial Palliyunarthal, a ritual to awaken and prepare the deity for the day’s festivities followed by the Ganapathi Homam to remove obstacles and invoke divine grace. The day continues with Usha Pooja, Uchappooja and Kalasha Abhishekam accompanied by traditional music and devotional songs particularly the Pulluvan Paattu which adds a unique spiritual atmosphere to the temple premises.
Community involvement is a key aspect of the celebration with Annadanam or the offering of food to devotees reflecting the temple’s commitment to service and charity. In the evening, devotees participate in Deeparadhana and Deepakkazhcha where lamps are lit creating a mesmerizing spectacle of light and devotion.
