Ashwathi Mahotsavam at Nediyanickal Devi Temple, Alappuzha is one of the most vibrant and spiritually enriching temple festivals in Kerala, celebrated with great devotion and grandeur. The festival is dedicated to the presiding deity of the temple invoking divine blessings and fostering a sense of community among devotees.
It is marked by a blend of sacred rituals, traditional art forms and devotional programs that attract devotees from across the region.
The celebrations typically begin in the early hours with temple rituals and poojas including the recitation of sacred texts and offerings to the deity. One of the highlights of the festival is the Bhagavata Parayanam, a continuous recitation of the Bhagavata Purana performed by learned reciters which is believed to bring spiritual merit and peace to the devotees. The temple premises are adorned with lamps during Deepaaradhana and Deepakazhcha creating a mesmerizing atmosphere of light and devotion.
Another major attraction is the Athazha Pooja and Sri Bhoothabali which is performed in the evening followed by cultural programs such as Ganamela and Nrityanjali. Renowned artists and local performers contribute to these programs, blending devotional music, traditional Kerala art forms and contemporary performances making it a unique spiritual and cultural experience.
The festival also features the Thiruvabharana Ghosa Yatra, a ceremonial procession of temple ornaments accompanied by traditional music, drum performances and devotional chants.
