It is one of the oldest temples in Alappuzha. The presiding deity of this temple is goddess Bhadra Kaali. Muruga, Sasatha and Ganapathy are the main sub deities here. It is believed that Mullakkal Bhagawathy comes to this temple for the Arattu. Meena Bharani is the day when the Bharani Nakshatram falls in the Malayalam month of meenam. The day is of great significance at Goddess Temples in Kerala. This festival is celebrated with pomp and gaiety. The shrine is traditionally decorated with plantain, coconut leaves, flowers, leaves, traditional lamps and lights. There are special poojas and offerings during the festival period. Traditional performing arts and music and dance are staged during the festival period. The highlight of the festival is Kuthiyottam and Kettukazha. Kuthiyottam is performed as an important offering to the deity. This is a ritual dance practiced and perfected through several centuries. Thousands of devotees throng to witness the events and rituals. Numerous cultural programs and temple arts are performed on all days of the festival. Caparisoned elephants, melam, fireworks and sheevali are part of the festival. Another major event of the festival is the display of huge decorated forms of temple cars known as Kuthiras. Kettukazhcha which is a visual spectacle attracts people from different parts of India and around the world.
