Makaram Festival at Thirupuliyoor Mahavishnu Temple is celebrated annually for 10 days during January/February (Makaram). It features various cultural and religious events.

തിരുപുളിയൂർ മഹാവിഷ്ണു ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ മകരം ഉത്സവം, ജനുവരി/ഫെബ്രുവരി (മകരം) മാസങ്ങളിൽ വാർഷികമായി 10 ദിവസം ആഘോഷിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. വിവിധ സാംസ്കാരിക, ആരാധനാപരമായ പരിപാടികൾക്ക് സാക്ഷ്യംവഹിക്കുന്നു.

Puliyoor Maha Vishnu is also called as Thrippuliyoor Mahavishnu. The temple is one of the 108 Vishnu temples, which are believed to be the most sacred places. These places are known as Divya Desams as the Perumals of these places conduct celebration by Alwars the poet saints, who were the leading lights of the Vaishnavites. Makaram Festival Thirupuliyoor Mahavishnu Temple Alappuzha Kerala The Thirupuliyoor Mayapiran Perumal Temple is related to Bheema. It is believed that the idol installed in this temple was worshipped by Bheema, the second of Pandava. He is believed to be instrumental in the construction of this temple. The deity of this temple is Lord Mahavishnu and the idol is in a standing posture. It is 20 inches high with four hands holding in each with Sankhu, Chakra, Gada and Padma(Lotus). The temple faces towards east like at Aranmula Temple and Sabarimala Ayyappa temple. There are 18 steps in the front side of the Puliyoor temple. Sreekovil is conical in shape. Mandapam, Nalampalam, Balikkal Pura, the Temple Tank, Sevapanthal, Compound wall etc- resembles the characteristics of a major typical Kerala Temple can be seen here. The ceiling of the Mandapam is rich with wood carvings.

Makaram Festival 2025 | Mahavishnu Temple Thirupuliyoor Alappuzha

This festival starts in the Malayalam month of Makaram (January/February). It is a 10 days spectacular event. There is a flag hoisting ceremony marking the beginning of the festival. The shrine is traditionally decorated with plantain, coconut leaves, flowers, leaves, traditional lamps and lights. There are special poojas and offerings during the festival period. Also annadanam is provided on all the days. Traditional performing arts and music and dance are staged during the period. Thousands of devotees throng to witness this temple on the festival days. Numerous cultural programs and temple arts are performed along with religious discourse on all days of the festival. Floats and kavadis attract a large number of people even from far away areas. On the final day Arattu (holy bath) takes place where the utsava murti of the deity is taken out of the shrine for ritual bathing . Caparisoned elephants and melam are part of the ritual.
