The Shivarathri Mahotsavam 2026 at Kavarattu Sree Mahadeva Temple in Alappuzha is one of the most revered religious celebrations in the region, attracting devotees from across Kerala. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple holds immense spiritual and cultural significance and the festival is a perfect blend of devotion, rituals and traditional Kerala art forms.
Spanning over ten days, the festival provides a unique opportunity for devotees to immerse themselves in the divine atmosphere while participating in various ceremonial and cultural activities.
The celebrations begin with the flag hoisting and continue with a series of daily poojas, homams and special rituals led by the temple priests. Key religious ceremonies include Abhishekam, Kalashapuja, Maha Ganapathi Homam, Pradosha Pooja and Annadanam offering devotees a chance to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva. The temple’s Thirumuttam is beautifully decorated creating a spiritually uplifting environment that resonates with sacred chants and devotional music.
In addition to the religious rites, the festival features cultural programs such as traditional music, dance performances, drama and folk art presentations that showcase Kerala’s rich heritage. The Thiruaarattu, a grand ceremonial procession with the deity taken to a nearby water body for a ritual bath marks the culmination of the festival and is one of the most awaited events, attracting large crowds. Annadanam, the community meal is offered daily emphasizing the spirit of sharing and community participation.
The festival also encourages the participation of local families and devotees, who contribute through offerings, sponsorships and volunteer work.
