Karthika Pongala is one of the most significant and vibrant festivals celebrated at the Chettikulangara Bhagavathi Temple in Alappuzha, Kerala. This annual ritual holds a special place in the hearts of devotees particularly women who participate in large numbers to offer Pongala to the goddess.
The festival is marked by a unique spiritual atmosphere as thousands of devotees gather in and around the temple premises to prepare the traditional Pongala offering. Pongala involves cooking a special sweet rice dish in clay pots over a wood fire, offered to the goddess as a symbol of devotion and gratitude. Devotees bring all the necessary ingredients including rice, jaggery, coconut and incense and set up small hearths along the temple streets creating a mesmerizing sea of flames and devotion.
The ceremony is led by the temple’s chief priest Brahmashri Plakkudi Illam Unnikrishnan Namboothiri who oversees the rituals and sanctifies the offerings. The temple authorities arrange for designated spaces and provide guidance to the devotees to ensure a smooth and orderly celebration. The sacred fire is lit in the early morning, around 6:15 AM and the Pongala offerings commence shortly after at 7:15 AM continuing until the rituals are completed.
