Garudan Thookkam, which literally means “the hanging of Garuda” is a ritualistic performance where devotees enact a dramatic offering to the goddess. Traditionally, performers dressed as Garuda the eagle mount of Lord Vishnu carry ceremonial arrangements and participate in an elaborate procession accompanied by the rhythmic beats of drums, traditional percussion instruments and chanting of devotional songs. The spectacle is both a display of devotion and a remarkable cultural performance that showcases Kerala’s rich heritage of temple rituals and folk traditions.
The festival begins with preliminary rituals in the morning invoking the blessings of the goddess through poojas, chants and ceremonial offerings.
