The Meenam Aswathi Pongala Mahotsavam at Major Valiyakulangara Devi Temple in Alappuzha is one of the most significant annual temple festivals dedicated to Goddess Valiyakulangara Devi. The festival is celebrated with deep devotion during the Malayalam month of Meenam on the auspicious Aswathi star day.
Thousands of devotees from different parts of Kerala and nearby regions gather at the temple to participate in the sacred rituals and offer prayers to the presiding deity who is believed to bless devotees with prosperity, protection and well being.
A major highlight of the festival is the Pongala ritual where devotees prepare a special offering made of rice, jaggery, coconut and ghee in earthen pots. The sacred fire for preparing Pongala is ceremonially lit from the temple hearth and the flame is then distributed to the rows of devotees who prepare the offering with prayer and devotion. This ritual symbolizes surrender, gratitude and the seeking of divine blessings from the Goddess. The entire temple surroundings and nearby areas become filled with rows of Pongala hearths, creating a powerful spiritual atmosphere.
Another important attraction of the celebration is the traditional Kettukazhcha, a ceremonial offering presented by devotees and local communities. These offerings are beautifully decorated structures prepared as a mark of devotion and gratitude to the Goddess. The Kettukazhcha processions are brought to the temple premises following traditional customs and rituals. Devotees also witness sacred temple processions, special poojas and cultural elements that reflect the rich heritage of Kerala’s temple traditions.
During the festival day, the temple premises and surrounding areas are filled with devotional chants, lamps and the presence of thousands of devotees. Special prayers and rituals are performed throughout the day creating an atmosphere of spiritual celebration and unity among devotees. The Meenam Aswathi Pongala Mahotsavam continues to be an important religious and cultural event that preserves the long-standing traditions of the temple and strengthens the devotion of the community towards Goddess Valiyakulangara Devi.
