Aswathi Mahotsavam is the major annual festival celebrated with great devotion and enthusiasm at the Valiyakulangara Devi Temple in Mahadevikadu village, Karthikappally, Alappuzha district, Kerala. This vibrant festival takes place during the Malayalam month of Kumbham (February–March) on the Aswathi nakshatra and in 2026 it culminates around February 22. The celebration spans several days and draws thousands of devotees, tourists and cultural enthusiasts from across the region showcasing the rich spiritual and cultural heritage of Kerala.
The festival has deep roots in local legend and tradition intertwined with the belief that the life force of Valiyakulangara Amma has powerful protective and benevolent qualities. Rituals during Aswathi Mahotsavam include Ganapathi Homam, Sarppam Pattu, Parakottipattu and Chanthattam which are offered to seek divine blessings, fulfillment of wishes, and protection from adversity. Devotees also participate in Kuthiyottam a traditional offering symbolizing reverence and dedication to the goddess.
One of the most spectacular and eagerly awaited parts of the festival is the Valiyakulangara‑Kettukazhcha, a grand procession featuring towering decorated temple cars and icons of divine figures like Bhima and Hanuman. The kettukazhcha procession, along with fireworks, Thayambaka, Kathakali and other classical art performances adds a visual and cultural splendor that captivates all who attend.
