Thripuliyoor Mahavishnu Temple, located in Puliyoor, Alappuzha District, Kerala, is a revered shrine dedicated to Lord Vishnu, worshipped as Mayapiran or Thripuliyoorappan. It is one of the five ancient temples in the Chengannur area, each believed to have been built by the Pandavas from the Mahabharata.
Additionally, Goddess Lakshmi, known as Porkodi Naachiyar, is worshipped here. The temple, one of the 108 Divya Desams, holds significant historical and religious importance. Open daily from 5 am to 10 am and 4 pm to 7 pm, the temple sees extended hours during festivals, drawing numerous devotees seeking the blessings of Vishnu and Lakshmi.
Arattu Festival at Thripuliyoor Mahavishnu Temple is celebrated during the Tamil month of Margazhi (December-January). This festival is a grand event marked by a ceremonial procession in which the deity is carried to a nearby river or water body for a ritual bath (Aratu). The procession is accompanied by traditional music, dance, and other cultural performances, creating a vibrant and festive atmosphere.
Kavadiattam Festival takes place during the Tamil month of Thai (January-February). This festival is particularly colorful and energetic, featuring the traditional dance form known as Kavadiattam. Devotees carry beautifully decorated kavadis (semi-circular wooden structures) on their shoulders, often adorned with peacock feathers and flowers, as an offering to the deity. The Kavadiattam is performed with rhythmic movements and music, symbolizing devotion and penance.
