Mannarasala Sree Nagaraja Temple is one of the most revered and ancient serpent temples in Kerala. Dedicated primarily to Lord Nagaraja, the King of Serpents, the temple is an internationally renowned pilgrimage centre that attracts thousands of devotees from across India and abroad. Surrounded by dense groves, towering trees and a tranquil natural environment, the temple reflects the deep rooted tradition of serpent worship that has been an integral part of Kerala's spiritual and cultural heritage for centuries. The peaceful atmosphere, combined with the sacred serpent grove offers devotees a unique and spiritually uplifting experience.According to legend, the temple is closely associated with Lord Parasurama, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu who is believed to have reclaimed the land of Kerala from the sea. It is said that after creating Kerala, Parasurama consecrated numerous serpent shrines to restore harmony between humans and nature. Mannarasala eventually became the most important among these sacred shrines. Another unique aspect of the temple is its association with the Brahmin family that traditionally manages the temple, where the senior-most woman, known as the Valiyamma performs the principal rituals. This rare tradition makes Mannarasala one of the few temples in India where a woman holds the highest priestly authority.

One of the most striking features of the temple is the presence of more than 100,000 serpent idols installed along the pathways, beneath ancient trees and throughout the temple premises. These stone idols, offered by devotees over generations, symbolize gratitude, devotion and prayers fulfilled. Walking through the temple complex surrounded by countless serpent images creates an extraordinary spiritual ambience unlike any other temple in Kerala. Mannarasala Sree Nagaraja Temple is especially famous as a sacred destination for couples seeking the blessing of children. Devotees firmly believe that sincere prayers and special offerings made to Lord Nagaraja can remove obstacles related to fertility and family well-being. Many childless couples visit the temple to perform rituals such as Uruli Kamazhthal, a unique offering where a traditional bronze vessel is placed upside down before the deity while praying for offspring. Once their prayers are answered, devotees return to the temple to perform thanksgiving rituals and offer new serpent idols as a mark of gratitude.
