The temple is believed to have its origins dating back five millennia, linked to the legend of the Khandava Dahanam. The current structure was built by Moolam Thirunal.

The presiding deity is a unique Prayoga Chakra Prathishta of Sri Krishna, depicted in a four-armed Vishnu form holding the Panchajanya Shankha, Sudarshana Chakra, and butter in three hands, while the fourth hand rests on the hip. This fierce form of the deity is rare, and the temple is especially known for the offering of Raktha-pushpanjali.
